An Amazing Christmas Cactus Bloom!

An Amazing Christmas Cactus Bloom!I had this Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera) in my office at work for at least 10 years and grew it from a tiny plant about the size of my finger. It was given to me by a co-worker who said it came from a plant her grandmother had and she gave away “babies” every year at Christmas. I gave away “babies” myself to many who marveled at it. All you have to do is pinch off a few green segments and stick the lower segment in dirt, and magically it continues to grow a new plant with very little care!

I had heard it was supposed to have beautiful blooms, but for the many years I had it in my office under the harsh flourescent light under my credenza it grew like a weed…but never bloomed. When I retired in September and brought my “friend” home, I placed it at a window in my studio that faces the bright afternoon sun as it sets in the west. I kinda ignored it for a few weeks and when I looked the other day, it had exploded with blossoms! It was as if it was celebrating the sun it had never seen!

Oh, the parallel is too obvious. How normal and nice it seemed in my office. But what potential beauty it never displayed. It needed to see and soak in light from the true sun – God’s agent as sustainer of all life on earth – to fully realize it’s potential. The richness of colors that were hidden for years is breathtaking!

Take a minute this Christmas to give thanks to our God for sending Jesus to shine the healing and restoring light of his Grace on the tired and weary, and who allows His children to blossom in ways they never imagined as they bask in His true light!

“But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings.” Mal. 4:2
